{"id":764,"date":"2026-03-27T09:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-03-27T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/coffinfolk.se\/?p=764"},"modified":"2026-03-26T19:03:03","modified_gmt":"2026-03-26T18:03:03","slug":"skrock-och-vidskepelser-pa-kyrkogarden","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/coffinfolk.se\/en\/skrock-och-vidskepelser-pa-kyrkogarden\/","title":{"rendered":"Superstitions and Folklore in the Cemetery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-d9b20c6bed0ecec710ef3df4c64f930c\" style=\"color:#3b3b3b\">In today\u2019s modern society, where most things have a logical explanation, cemeteries still carry an almost magical, faintly supernatural aura.<br>Perhaps there are things you do \u2014 or don\u2019t do \u2014 purely on instinct, as if they are something we inherited and never needed to be taught were right or wrong.<br><br>When I visited \u201cmy\u201d cemetery the other day, I found myself thinking about the unwritten rules most of us dutifully follow in such a place, even though we know there would likely be no real consequences if we broke them. <br>\u2026but why take the risk and possibly offend someone who may have all the time in the world?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-c76dbe1d7b20aae9d9e45ba506da368e\" style=\"color:#3b3b3b\"><strong>A Place Where the Boundary Between Worlds Is Thin<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-e081d0e17b195513f1525f01b3acf5db\" style=\"color:#3b3b3b\">In many European countries, the cemetery is seen as a place where the boundary between the world of the living and the dead is very thin. Under the right circumstances, the dead could return to the dimension of the living.<br><br>During church holidays such as All Saints\u2019 weekend, or around midnight, it was especially important to be cautious when visiting the cemetery. Otherwise, one might disturb the dead or attract the attention of a restless spirit. The spirit could then follow you home and haunt you.<br><br>If you called out the name of someone deceased, you risked receiving an answer.<br>\u2026and they were not always willing to say \u201cgoodbye\u201d again.<br><br>Whistling is also discouraged. It may be seen as a way of calling upon evil spirits, disturbing the peace of the dead, and is considered disrespectful in many cultures. Safer to listen to birdsong \u2014 or your own music through headphones instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-972c2a0832f79abade3af4f36451d322\" style=\"color:#3b3b3b\"><strong>Watch Where You Step<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-1ba279c6dd0d4bcde2a21adeaa8fd87e\" style=\"color:#3b3b3b\">Many cultures consider it disrespectful to walk across a grave, as it disturbs the one resting there. <br>It may also bring bad luck, misfortune, or in some cases hasten your own \u2014 or someone else\u2019s \u2014 death.<br>To stumble at a grave is considered a bad omen.<br><br>Walk carefully, for your own sake as well as for the dead. <br>The cemetery is meant to be a peaceful place, so do not rush. Move at the pace your body needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-ab897c5b9834d59d36f48e0248446163\" style=\"color:#3b3b3b\"><strong>Gifts and Mementos to the Cemetery \u2014 Not From It<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-4f8671156d3d7f337eeb72454e44ed85\" style=\"color:#3b3b3b\">Many of us have left flowers or lit candles at a grave. In other cultures, offerings may also include coins, food, or drink.<br><br>Taking something home from a cemetery, however, rarely happens.<br>Whether it is soil, stones, decorations, or offerings, removing something from a grave \u2014 or worse, stealing from someone\u2019s resting place \u2014 feels wrong.<br>It has long been seen not only as disrespectful but also as an act that brings misfortune upon the one who takes it.<br><br>If the feeling is particularly strong for you \u2014 that you do not want to bring home objects that once decorated a grave \u2014 consider using items made from natural materials that can decompose, if you wish to bury them respectfully after they have fulfilled their purpose by the gravestone.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-508939739347785aa735dbcd08138e33\" style=\"color:#3b3b3b\"><strong>Guardians and Protectors<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-1a1625e76c306877ad25ffeeaecdf599\" style=\"color:#3b3b3b\">There has been much talk of bad luck and misfortune \u2014 but there are also benevolent forces said to keep evil at bay. Church bells, for instance, whose ringing once called the congregation to service and drove away malevolent spirits.<br><br>Yew trees remain green all year round and are not only symbols of the soul\u2019s immortality; these resilient, long-lived trees are also said to offer protection against dark forces.<br><br>The Church Grim is another guardian who may still roam the cemetery grounds. It is often described as a large black dog with red eyes. Some stories speak of a fearsome beast one would do well not to provoke. <br>You can read more about the Kyrkogrimm <a href=\"https:\/\/coffinfolk.se\/en\/kyrkogrimmen\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/coffinfolk.se\/kyrkogrimmen\/\">HERE<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-e25190c278b413a954c0f989592852e9\" style=\"color:#3b3b3b\"><strong><strong>Signs That Comfort in Grief<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-d75c3a0f151d2ba2aa55a66901e86da4\" style=\"color:#3b3b3b\">Seeing animals such as butterflies or birds land on a gravestone \u2014 or on your own hand \u2014 can create a sense of presence from the one you miss. Likewise, when a candle flame flickers though the air is still, when it suddenly goes out, or when it burns unusually long, it may be interpreted as a sign from the other side.<br><br>Try not to search actively for these signs \u2014 the heart will tell you when they happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-91611f3c168ad0e890267f35cac0ede4\" style=\"color:#3b3b3b\">I am not religious, but it often feels as though something \u2014 or someone \u2014 is watching over me when I walk through a cemetery. <br>A safe, caring presence of some kind. The year was too worn to read properly.<br><br>\u201cAre you so fond of men in uniform that you even court those long deceased?\u201d\nThe hoarse voice laughing beside me could only belong to one person\u2014or one being. I looked up at Herrow as he appeared at my side.<br>\u201cUniform?\u201d I glanced at the headstone. \u201cWas Henrik in the military?\u201d<br>\u201cPolice officer. Died in the line of duty.\u201d Herrow\u2019s answer felt like a cool hand squeezing my heart.<br>\u201cOh. He continues to protect people, even in death.\u201d<br>Herrow\u2019s vertebrae clicked as he turned toward me so quickly I barely registered the movement.<br>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<br>\u201cI was on my way home from the cinema. Someone started following me and I couldn\u2019t shake him. I took a detour past the cemetery, slipped in through the gate and hid here behind the stone. Thankfully, he didn\u2019t follow me inside.\u201d<br>\u201cWell done. Even those who are unfortunate in thought seem capable of respecting a cemetery\u2019s peace.\u201d He extended a bony hand and helped me to my feet. I took a misstep and stepped across the grave.<br>\u201cOh\u2014sorry!\u201d Herrow\u2019s gaze flickered between the well-kept lawn and me.<br>\u201cI don\u2019t think he minds.\u201d<br>\u201cIt still feels wrong.\u201d I shrugged and walked as if along an invisible tightrope between Henrik\u2019s grave and his neighbor\u2019s until I reached the gravel path.<br><br>We walked slowly along the stone wall enclosing the cemetery. A cool breeze carried the fresh scent of yew\u2014and Herrow\u2019s own scent of juniper and lilac.<br>\u201cHerrow\u2026 Is there something here that guards or protects this place? I mean something like you\u2014something more than what people simply call a \u2018presence\u2019?\u201d<br>\u201cDoes it feel like someone is keeping a watchful eye on you here?\u201d I nodded slowly.<br>\u201cI never feel alone here, even when no other people are nearby. But it\u2019s always a safe feeling. Never suspicious. Never threatening.\u201d<br>\u201cYou move with respect and act with reverence. That does not go unnoticed.\u201d<br>\u201cIn that case, Mr. Lind must have taken real offense when I accidentally tripped over his grave. After that I felt cursed with bad luck for three days\u2026\u201d I muttered, glancing toward the headstone whose lower edge was nearly hidden in the grass\u2014practically designed to trip people.<br>\u201cOh, that was likely just an unfortunate coincidence. But to be safe, perhaps take a detour if you need to pass Mr. Lind again. If nothing else, for your own sake\u2014so you don\u2019t hurt yourself.\u201d<br><br>Farther away, I noticed a woman moving from one grave to another. When she picked up a lantern and carried it toward the first grave, I was torn between rushing over to scold her and remembering the unspoken rule to preserve the place\u2019s stillness.<br>I glared at her, frozen where I stood. She must have felt watched, because she looked up.<br>When she saw me, she quickly turned on her heel and hurried toward one of the exits with long strides.<br><br>I hurried to the grave that had been decorated with stolen goods and picked up the lantern.<br>\u201cIt\u2019s nothing personal. It simply wasn\u2019t left for you.\u201d<br>I marched over and returned it to where it belonged.<br>\u201cThere. Order restored.\u201d<br>A loud crash sounded outside the cemetery gates. I stood on my toes to see what had happened, and it was hard not to smile with a flicker of schadenfreude when I saw the woman sprawled beside her bicycle. She was quickly back on her feet and climbed onto it again.<br>\u201cHaha, perhaps it isn\u2019t always just unfortunate coincidences after all.\u201d Herrow turned to me.\n\u201cRespect is a curious force.
