Its rider was named Death, and Hades was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine and plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth.\"<\/em><br>\u2013 \u200aRevelation 6:7\u20138<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-75a553e4932b3e6d7bf018d6503daf2c\" style=\"color:#3b3b3b\">Like its rider, Death, the horse bears a sickly, pale yellow-green hue \u2014 a color associated with that of a corpse. He can also move freely between the nine worlds, including Helheim, the realm of the dead.<br><br>Like many figures in mythology, Sleipnir has an intriguing lineage.<br>His parents are Loki (who gave birth to the horse after transforming himself into a mare) and the giant stallion Sva\u00f0ilfari. He is the half-sibling of Fenrir the wolf, the Midgard Serpent, and the death goddess Hel.<br><br>It was not only Odin who rode the magnificent Sleipnir \u2014 those who fell in battle were also allowed to mount him and ride to Valhalla in Asgard.<br>Valhalla was Odin\u2019s dwelling, where he gathered skilled warriors for his army in preparation for the final battle of Ragnar\u00f6k.<br>It was during Ragnar\u00f6k that Sleipnir ultimately met his fate. Together with Odin, he was devoured by Fenrir.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"711\" src=\"https:\/\/coffinfolk.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/20.4-Offergavor-vid-Sveriges-Asatrosamfunds-varblot-i-Gamla-Uppsala-2010-1024x711.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-705\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.4402443271626437;width:550px\" srcset=\"\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" data-srcset=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-366a504684e6039416a03ca2a98afb23\" style=\"color:#3b3b3b\"><strong>Horse sacrifices and grave horses \u2013 a macabre act of love<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-1ae3f3eb35d96f10b8a590046139f7ae\" style=\"color:#3b3b3b\">Here in Sweden, horses have been found buried in or beside human graves as early as the Late Iron Age. Even then, horses held a central place in everyday life.<br>It may sound macabre today, but allowing the deceased to bring their horses with them into the afterlife was an act of great care and respect. In addition to the animals themselves, beautifully decorated bridles and saddles were often buried as well.<br><br>Similarly, horses were sacrificed during annual bl\u00f3ts to appease the gods with the most valuable offering one could give. It was believed that horses possessed supernatural powers \u2014 even in death.<br>The meat was then prepared and consumed during a ritual feast, a practice that was later forbidden with the arrival of Christianity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-2058b0e2e479c90e6fdf58534e9dd26a\" style=\"color:#3b3b3b\"><em>\u201cDeath\u2019s pale horse looked up from its oats and gave a little whinny of greeting. The horse\u2019s name was Binky. He was a real horse. Death had tried fiery steeds and skeletal horses in the past, and found them impractical, especially the fiery ones, which tended to set light to their own bedding and stand in the middle of it looking embarrassed.\u201d <\/em><br>\u2013 Terry Pratchett \u2013 Reaper Man<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-19b81310e7fa22f0d584d366918f9cfc\" style=\"color:#3b3b3b\">Horses are amazing creatures. Her brown coat gleamed in the light from the lamps in the ceiling. I much preferred riding out in the forest, but in this snowstorm I was grateful the farm had an indoor arena I could borrow.<br><br>As we walked along one of the long sides of the arena, I glanced up at the large clock hanging on the wall. 7:00 p.m. Herrow had said he would be here by now, and if there\u2019s one thing the Grim Reaper is, it\u2019s punctual.<br><br>I had barely finished that thought when Herrow took shape in the middle of the arena. But he wasn\u2019t alone. Beside him stood something that had once been a horse, but now looked more like a reanimated corpse. The horse was black as night, missing a leg, and worst of all\u2014it was headless.<br>I gasped. Stardust came to a dead stop and began backing away, trying to put as much distance as possible between herself and the terrifying creature.<br>\u201cHerrow! What the he\u2014what is that?!\u201d I tried to calm Stardust, but I could feel my own heart pounding in my chest. Herrow\u2019s horse radiated death and misery.<br>\u201cI overheard you and Hannah talking about horses earlier at the caf\u00e9 and got a bit inspired. Thought I might get myself a steed too. What do you think of my helhest?\u201d<br>I shook my head. Stardust backed up until her hindquarters were pressed against the wall.&nbsp;<br>Herrow looked up at the helhest.<br>\u201cPerhaps you\u2019re a bit too much after all, my friend. Very well\u2014return to your duties in the churchyard until we meet again!\u201d The Reaper clapped his hands, and the horse vanished into thin air.<br><br>A new calm washed over us once the ominous horse was gone. Stardust took a few tentative steps toward Herrow and stretched out her muzzle so he could greet her.<br>\u201cHave I exhausted my goodwill with both of you, or would you like to see more candidates?\u201d Herrow looked almost embarrassed\u2014about as embarrassed as a skeleton can look, that is.<br>\u201cAs long as they\u2019re not quite so horrifying,\u201d I said. Stardust agreed with a soft snort.<br>\u201cThat\u2019s the spirit, ladies! Let\u2019s see\u2026\u201d Herrow clapped his hands again, and another horse appeared.<br><br>This one was at least intact, but its coat had a sickly greenish-yellow hue that almost made me nauseous. The stench that rose from it whenever it moved didn\u2019t help. The horse\u2019s milky eyes met mine, and a chill ran down my spine.<br>\u201cHerrow\u2026?\u201d I had to clear my throat before continuing. \u201cIs that\u2026 um\u2026 a horse from the Bible\u2026?\u201d I almost dreaded the answer.<br>\u201cIndeed! A true classic. You know the fourth rider was the only one named\u2014Death.\u201d Herrow straightened a little.<br>\u201cMhm. One of the Four Horsemen symbolizing the end of the world\u2026?\u201d&nbsp;<br>\u201cYes, exact\u2014\u201d He paused. \u201cIt\u2019s the color, isn\u2019t it?\u201d He snapped his fingers, and the horse\u2019s coat shifted to a bright green. \u201cBetter? A more modern feel.\u201d<br>I bit my lip, searching for the right words.<br>\u201cNo, it\u2019s not the color, it\u2019s more\u2014\u201d I gestured vaguely at the entire apparition. \u201cThe symbolism. And the smell.\u201d<br>Herrow leaned on his scythe and traced a finger along his jawbone.<br>\u201cYou mortals do have a keen eye for detail, that\u2019s true. Oh, I know!\u201d<br><br>Death clapped his hands, and a third candidate announced himself with a thunderous crack that sounded more like lightning than hooves.<br>Stardust lifted her head, ears pricked, and I\u2019m fairly sure my eyes grew as wide as saucers as we took in the sight before us. You don\u2019t see an eight-legged horse every day.<br><br>The grey stallion was clearly aware of his status and posed proudly at Death\u2019s side.<br>\u201cNordic style and power in perfect balance. And he\u2019s escorted fallen warriors for centuries already, so he knows much of the job description. Isn\u2019t that right, Sleipnir?\u201d<br>The magnificent horse tossed his head and pawed the ground, his eight hooves striking in perfect rhythm. \u201cWell, of course one must take a test ride when given the chance!\u201d Herrow laughed, swinging smoothly into the saddle. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;<br>I barely had time to blink before they were at the far end of the arena. Another blink, and they were back in front of me and Stardust. &nbsp;<br>\u201cWhat speed!\u201d Herrow whooped, adjusting the hood that had slipped off his skull. \u201cThis would be quite something to be collected by, wouldn\u2019t it, Quinley?\u201d<br>\u201cHaha, yes, well\u2026 but\u2014\u201d Sleipnir gave me a skeptical look. \u201cI just think death can already come suddenly enough for people as it is. They probably need all the time they can get to settle into their new reality.\u201d I shifted uneasily in the saddle, worried I\u2019d offended a divine horse.<br>\u201cYou may be right,\u201d Herrow said, stroking Sleipnir\u2019s sleek neck. \u201cYou\u2019re perhaps a bit overqualified for the task, my boy.\u201d<br>\u201cLike buying a Ferrari for a leisurely Sunday ride,\u201d I giggled.<br>Sleipnir snorted, as if he found the comparison amusing as well. Herrow clapped his hands, and Odin\u2019s grey steed vanished with another resounding crack.<br>\u201cWell, that was the extent of my ideas,\u201d Herrow shrugged.<br>\u201cCome on\u2014there\u2019s room for one more here.\u201d I patted Stardust\u2019s back behind the saddle.<br><br>Together we trotted around the arena. Stardust was probably just as shaken as I was after everything we\u2019d seen, but she was as sure-footed as ever. Herrow sat securely behind me, his scythe resting against his shoulder, his bony hands holding a gentle grip around my waist.<br>\u201cYou know, Herrow,\u201d I said, \u201cyou don\u2019t arrive with thunder and lightning. It\u2019s more like you\u2019ve always been with people\u2014but it\u2019s only at the end of life that they truly see you.\u201d I glanced over my shoulder. Herrow tilted his head, listening. \u201cYou\u2019re not always a frightening sight either. Some of us see you as a good friend, even while we\u2019re still alive.\u201d Herrow\u2019s hands tightened slightly around me. \u201cYou\u2019re a simple being, with your cloak and scythe. You\u2019re just you. If you want a companion, it should reflect that.\u201d<br><br>We slowed to a walk, and Stardust stopped with a contented snort. Herrow was back on solid ground before I was. He stroked the mare\u2019s muzzle.<br>\u201cI agree, Quinley. No point trying to fix what isn\u2019t broken. You horses are like me\u2014perfect just as you are.\u201d<br>\u201cNot to mention humble!\u201d I giggled.<br>\u201cWell, when one is as written about in history as I am\u2014and these majestic creatures\u2014it\u2019s easy to let things go to one\u2019s head,\u201d Herrow chuckled, scratching Stardust between the eyes.
