Coffinfolk has no age limit, and it\u2019s always a joy when we get visits from little kids.
Just like with adults, some of them are bold and curious while others are quiet and reserved.

Last week, a father brought his daughter for the first time. She looked around as if it were any ordinary caf\u00e9. The fact that a grim reaper was sitting on one of the sofas drinking coffee didn\u2019t seem strange to her at all. The father bent down to explain who Herrow was, and that he was kind even if he looked a bit scary.
The little girl turned to her dad:
\u201cDaddy, he\u2019s just a skeleton. Those aren\u2019t dangerous.\u201d
I exchanged a glance with Harley behind the counter. My boss shrugged and gave a crooked smile.
\u201cWell, she\u2019s not wrong.\u201d 
I had to agree \u2014 Herrow had a wonderful way with both animals and people, especially children.

As expected, it only took a few minutes after they\u2019d sat down before Herrow joined them, and the girl\u2019s questions began to flow freely.
\u201cDon\u2019t your feet get cold when you walk in the snow without shoes?\u201d \u201cDo you ever sleep in, or do you work all the time?\u201d \u201cDo you collect animals and flowers when they die?\u201d
The father followed the conversation, looking just as curious about the answers as his daughter.

The girl chewed her muffin slowly while she thought of more questions.
She reached for Herrow\u2019s hand and placed her own, much smaller one, over it.
\u201cDo you get sad when people are scared of you? And who comforts you when you\u2019re scared?\u201d
The father froze mid-sip, caught off guard by the depth of her thoughts. I felt the same sudden ache and warmth in my chest at once. Kids are wiser than we give them credit for.
\u201cI don\u2019t get sad for my own sake, but I can feel sad for theirs. I don\u2019t mean anyone harm when I come to fetch someone. I just don\u2019t want anyone to go alone, so I come to keep them company on the journey to Eternity.\u201d Herrow took a sip of coffee before continuing:\n\u201cI\u2019m rarely afraid, but sometimes I get nervous when Harley wants me to try one of his new coffee drink recipes.\u201d Herrow leaned closer to the girl as if they were sharing a secret. 
\u201cI heard that!\u201d Harley snapped, laughing.
\u201cGood!\u201d Herrow replied with a chuckle.

Another memorable day was when I came into the caf\u00e9 and found Herrow\u2019s cloak spread out across the floor. On top of the black fabric lay Herrow \u2014 or at least parts of him. The rest lay in a little pile beside him. A woman was gently picking up one bone at a time and handing it to a boy and a girl, who examined each piece and named it before pointing out where it should go.

Harley sat on a sofa watching them work.
\u201cWe\u2019re having an anatomy lesson. Annika here is an orthopedic surgeon and front-runner for \u2018Aunt of the Year.\u2019\u201d
Annika looked up with a smile as she handed what even I could recognize as one of Herrow\u2019s femurs to the kids.
\u201cMy sister hopes the kids will follow in her footsteps and become accountants, but now that they\u2019re studying anatomy in school, they seem to take after me instead.\u201d
\u201cI hate math\u2026\u201d the girl muttered, pointing to where the bone should go. \u201cI want to be an archaeologist. History is way more fun.\u201d
\u201cI think I want to be a pathologist. It sounds cool, and I like solving mysteries,\u201d the boy chimed in.
Annika rolled her eyes and sighed.
\u201cI told Jimmy not to show you the morgue\u2026 That\u2019s the last time I leave you with him when you visit me at the hospital.\u201d
The kids immediately began to object in protest.

\u201cI\u2019m guessing you were curious as a kid too? And you turned out fine anyway,\u201d I teased, taking the children\u2019s side.
\u201cYeah, yeah, that\u2019s true\u2026\u201d Annika picked up one of the smaller bones.
Neither of the kids knew the answer. I had no idea either.
One of Herrow\u2019s hands slid across the cloak and tapped the girl\u2019s knee. When she looked down, the hand pointed to where the other hand should attach to the lower arm.
\u201cOh! It\u2019s, um, the wrist-something bone.\u201d
\u201cNo cheating, Herrow!\u201d Annika scolded.
Herrow\u2019s skull turned, and I knew he was smiling even if he couldn\u2019t show it.
\u201cOh, come now. I\u2019m here to answer questions, after all.\u201d His spine curled together with a soft clicking sound. \u201cIf some kind soul could scratch me on\u2026 what was it again? Vertebrae T1 to T3, I\u2019d be eternally grateful.\u201d

There\u2019s something special about seeing children interact with Death with curiosity instead of fear and prejudice.
