Being death positive isn\u2019t about celebrating death, but about understanding it, giving it a natural place in our conversations, our culture, and our communities.
By talking about death with curiosity, honesty, and respect, we can reduce the stigma and fear surrounding it \u2014 and live a little more freely while we still can.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More Than Just Accepting Death<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Accepting death is often an internal decision \u2014 a recognition that death is a natural and inevitable part of life.
Death positivity takes it a step further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To be death positive means to actively engage with the topic of death \u2014 to talk about it, explore it, understand it, and make space for it in everyday life.
It\u2019s not about glorifying death, but about easing our fear of it \u2014 so we can live with greater awareness, openness, and compassion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You could say acceptance is silent, while death positivity is conversation.
One says, \u201cI know I will die.\u201d
The other asks, \u201cWhat does that mean for how I live today?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Death Positivity Is NOT<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Death positivity is not about glorifying, romanticizing, or diminishing death \u2013 or grief.
Death positivity is not about glorifying, romanticizing, or diminishing death \u2013 or grief.\nYou can be death positive and still feel fear about your own mortality or that of someone you love. Finding support to face that fear \u2013 through conversation and education \u2013 is at the heart of the death positive movement \u2013 me included.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is no right or wrong way to view death or what comes after.
Death positivity is more of a life philosophy than an opinion, independent of religion or politics.

Death positive people come in all forms and from all walks of life. We\u2019re not a uniform group \u2014 what unites us is the desire to change how society, culture, and everyday conversation relate to death.
That\u2019s what makes us death positive \u2014 not our style, music taste, or background.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finding Lightness in the Heavy<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Being death positive doesn\u2019t mean taking death lightly. It\u2019s about making space for both gravity and relief.
Talking about difficult things in an open, curious, and sometimes humorous way can make it easier for others to join the conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Humor can be a bridge to comfort and connection \u2014 even in life\u2019s darkest moments.
It takes sensitivity, of course, but sometimes laughter is exactly what helps us breathe again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Death Positive Movement<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Death Positive Movement began with American funeral director, author, and YouTuber Caitlin Doughty<\/a> , along with the organization The Order of the Good Death<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The movement encourages open, honest discussions about death \u2014 at home, in culture, and in society.\nIt aims to bring more transparency, choice, and understanding to everything surrounding the end of life, and to challenge the silence and avoidance that often surround death in Western culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Interest in the movement continues to grow worldwide \u2014 through conversations, blogs, podcasts, art, research, and funeral work \u2014 all sharing the same goal:\nto make death less frightening and more human.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ve been a member of The Order of the Good Death for several years and am a big fan of Caitlin Doughty.
Through Coffinfolk Caf\u00e9 and the characters Quinley & Herrow, I hope to spark curiosity about death positivity \u2014 or at least make it a little easier to approach death-related topics and find comfort in grief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who are Quinley and Herrow?<\/strong>
In Coffinfolk Caf\u00e9\u2019s stand alone short stories, you\u2019ll meet two most unlikely friends:
Quinley<\/strong> \u2013 Coffinfolk\u2019s caf\u00e9 host. A young woman who loves life just as much as she loves exploring the cultural heritage of death and sharing advice, information, and insights that can help people \u2013 whether they are facing their own encounter with Death or living with grief.
Herrow<\/strong> \u2013 Death himself. He may look frightening in his black cloak, but beneath the bones is a kind soul who enjoys a cup of coffee and sharing experiences gathered from every corner of time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLife-changing Conversations About Death\u201d<\/strong>
Narrated by Quinley<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The little bell above the front door chimed \u2014 but no one came in.\nIt was the third time in the past ten minutes that someone had changed their mind on the threshold.
I looked questioningly at Harley, who answered with a shrug.
The stool scraped softly against the wooden floor as I got up from behind the counter.
\u201cI think I\u2019ll just go sweep the leaves outside,\u201d I said.
Harley\u2019s quiet chuckle hinted that my curiosity wasn\u2019t nearly as subtle as I hoped.\nAh well \u2014 armed with a poor excuse and the broom standing by the door, I peeked out into the sleepy alley where our caf\u00e9 was tucked away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just as I suspected, a lost soul stood there, fidgeting. I greeted her cheerfully while sweeping up the few autumn leaves that had drifted onto the cobblestones.
The woman cleared her throat and took a hesitant step closer.
\u201cExcuse me\u2026 do you work here?\u201d
\"Yup!\"
\u201cUm, is it true that you\u2014\u201d She swallowed hard and leaned in, as if sharing a secret. \u201cIs it true that you can talk about death here?\u201d
\u201cAbsolutely! Here you can talk about Death \u2014 or with Death, if you\u2019d like.\u201d\nRight on cue, Harley\u2019s laughter rang from inside the caf\u00e9 \u2014 no doubt Herrow telling one of his dreadful dad jokes. \u201c\u2026and it doesn\u2019t always have to be grave business,\u201d I added with a grin.
The woman\u2019s eyes darted between me and the door.
\u201cI\u2019ve been trying to find other death positive people to meet outside the internet, but people just think I\u2019m crazy. The moment they hear the term \u2018death positive\u2019, they assume I\u2019m cheering for people to die \u2014 or that I\u2019m obsessed with my own.\u201d
I nodded as she spoke. I knew exactly what she meant. Before I met Herrow \u2014 and later found my place here at Coffinfolk with Harley \u2014 I\u2019d been in the same situation.
\u201cYou can feel safe talking freely here,\u201d I said. \u201cPeople come to listen, to share, to ask questions \u2014 without judgment. And if you\u2019d rather sit quietly with your thoughts, that\u2019s perfectly fine too.\u201d
The heavy wooden door creaked as I opened it, the little bell chiming once again as we stepped inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLook what I found!\u201d I called to Harley with a wide grin, setting the broom back in its corner.
\u201cWelcome,\u201d Harley said warmly, shaking her hand and asking what our new guest would like to drink.
\u201cCoffee, please. Black.\u201d Her voice was still barely above a whisper.
\u201cA coffee drinker after my own heart,\u201d rasped Herrow from his spot on the sofa. He raised his own cup of black coffee in a bony hand and nodded to the newcomer.
She gasped, her eyes following the Reaper\u2019s every movement.
Harley approached with two cups in hand.
\u201cDon\u2019t worry,\u201d he said with a wink. \u201cHe keeps his distance until you\u2019re ready to say hello.\nUnless, of course, you suddenly drop dead.\u201d That bit of dark humor broke her trance \u2014 she even managed a nervous giggle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Harley guided us to a table where Rosie, also known as \u2018the Cheerful Widow\u2019, was busy with a crossword. Rosie\u2019s warm personality and contagious smile could make anyone relax. She looked up, removed her glasses, and smiled as Harley set down the cups.
\u201cThis is\u2014?\u201d Harley looked apologetically at the woman beside me.
\u201cMia,\u201d she replied softly.
\u201cMia\u2019s new here,\u201d Harley began, but Rosie was already on her feet.
\u201cOh, how lovely \u2014 another new face! Come, sit, before your coffee gets cold.\u201d Mia hung up her coat and settled in.
Harley and I exchanged a smile as he returned to the counter, and I took one of the empty chairs at the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt must sound silly,\u201d Mia said after a moment, staring into her cup, \u201cthat I came here to talk about death when I\u2019m so afraid of it.\u201d Rosie patted her hand.
\u201cNonsense! I couldn\u2019t even be in the same room as him at first. Yesterday we sat at the same table, chatting with our dear Quinley here.\u201d She gave me one of those smiles that could melt even the coldest heart.
\u201cBeing death positive doesn\u2019t mean being fearless,\u201d I said. \u201cEspecially not about something as vast and unknown as death. What matters is that you\u2019re willing to face the fear.\u201d
\u201cI have to admit,\u201d Rosie said, chuckling, \u201che can be quite funny sometimes.\u201d\nI thought of Herrow\u2019s dreadful puns about himself and started laughing too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As time passed, Mia changed before our eyes. She sat up straighter, her voice grew stronger. When she spoke excitedly, her hands joined in as much as her words \u2014 just like mine did. And her laughter \u2014 bright, clear, and ringing \u2014 sounded so much like Rosie\u2019s. It seemed Mia had found her voice again.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
