The rain still pattered against the window as the film\u2019s end credits began to roll.
This gray autumn evening was made for a movie marathon. We started with the classic \u2018The Seventh Seal\u2019, moved on to the romantic drama \u2018Meet Joe Black\u2019, and finished with the comedy \u2018<\/strong>Monty Python\u2019s <\/strong>The Meaning of Life'.

I was still laughing so hard that tears streamed down my cheeks as I set the nearly empty popcorn bowl back on the table. The Grim Reaper, Herrow, sat beside me on the couch, laughing so much that his bones rattled inside his black cloak. I cleared my throat while wiping my face with the back of my hand. A small crease formed between my brows when I looked up at Herrow.
\u201cWhat? Do I have popcorn in my teeth?\u201d
I shook my head.
\u201cNo. I was just thinking\u2026 don\u2019t you ever get tired or frustrated about how you\u2019re portrayed in movies?\u201d
Herrow tilted his head. The TV\u2019s light made his hollow eye sockets look even darker.\n\u201cI mean, you almost always get cast as the villain\u2014or the punchline.\u201d
\u201cNo, I don\u2019t take offense\u2014quite the opposite. Villains are often the ones audiences end up loving, just look at Disney\u2019s characters. You humans can laugh at me all you like\u2014it\u2019s still me who gets the last laugh, isn\u2019t it?\u201d He chuckled and nudged me with his bony elbow. \u201cJokes aside, I think it\u2019s healthy to laugh at yourself. My work is full of seriousness\u2014so a little humor is always welcome.\u201d

I gathered up the DVDs scattered across the table. My eyes landed on the cover of \u2018Meet Joe Black\u2019, with Brad Pitt on the cover.
\u201cSo, will I have changed shape into a handsome movie star next time we meet?\u201d
\u201cHaha, no! A classic never goes out of style, Herrow. It\u2019s fun to see Death in other forms, but the Grim Reaper will always be the original for me.\u201d I stretched, my joints popping. Herrow copied me, and his spine clattered like a macabre xylophone as his vertebrae fell back into place. I gave him a crooked smile. \u201cWould you like people to see you as someone\u2026 well, more attractive?\u201d
Herrow let out a dry laugh. He leaned closer, lowering his voice as if sharing a secret.
\u201cAs it is now, people need some convincing to come along with me. But if I looked like that\u2014\u201d he tapped Brad Pitt\u2019s face on the cover \u201c\u2014people would never want to let go of me! Haha! No, I\u2019d rather stick with what I\u2019ve got now.\u201d He gestured down at his lanky frame. \u201cNot much eye candy, but unbeatable low-maintenance.\u201d

We kept chatting while I got ready for bed.
\u201cIf you could choose freely, who would you want to play Death in a movie?\u201d
\u201cHm\u2026 someone with the right bone structure, of course.\u201d Herrow tapped his jaw thoughtfully while I brushed my teeth.
\u201cI vote for Peter Stormare. Talented, can be both sweet and terrifying. Great voice,\u201d I mumbled around the toothbrush.
\u201cMhm, good choice. A promising candidate.\u201d
\u201cRight? Now we just need a script and a hefty production budget!\u201d

I crawled under the blanket while Herrow sat down on the edge of the bed.
\u201cI hope there\u2019ll be more films where you can just be\u2026you<\/em>. Not evil, not scary, but more of a comforting presence.\u201d His bony fingers stroked gently through my hair.
\u201cI don\u2019t mind being cast as the bad guy, <\/em>\u2014or even a romantic heartbreaker\u2014if it helps people start to come to terms with their own mortality. Everyone has to start somewhere.\u201d His hand kept combing through my hair. My eyelids grew heavier with every stroke. \u201cSleep well, Quinley.\u201d
\u201cSay it.\u201d I gave him a sleepy smile. \u201cPlease\u2026?\u201d Herrow shook his head with a soft, raspy laugh.
\u201cRest in peace, my friend.\u201d

I drifted off and was swept into a dream where Herrow directed the next big film with Death in the spotlight. Starring Peter Stormare, it followed the daily life of Death from his own perspective. Meetings, conversations, and endless cups of coffee\u2014often in the company of his life-loving and death-curious sidekick Quinley.
